Finding hope beyond violence – Maisie’s story

Sarah Waller

Witnessing a vicious attack and kidnapping in her own home shattered Maisie’s childhood.

In that moment, her happiness and sense of safety were brutally snatched away from her.

Traumatised, she withdrew from the world, unable to attend school or even step outside her home, terrified that she might never see her family again.

Living in fear

For months, Maisie retreated further into isolation. Even the thought of going to school and being separated from her loved ones filled her with dread. Her childhood seemed stolen; her voice silenced by trauma.

But hope emerged through the unwavering support of Church Army evangelist Karen Saunders and her team of volunteers. With tireless dedication, prayer, and gentle encouragement, they paved a path for Maisie’s recovery. Gradually, Maisie found the courage to attend the weekly youth groups run by Karen.

For the first time since the harrowing experience, she felt safe beyond the walls of her home. The youth group became her sanctuary, a place where connection and trust could begin to heal what violence had torn apart.

‘I don’t go to school anymore, I’m homeschooled, so it can be hard to have friends, but coming here, I get to do fun stuff with other kids. I feel safe when I’m here.’ Maisie

Hope brings change

But it was your support that gave her hope. Church Army’s youth group in Greenwich became her safe place, where our evangelist, Karen Saunders and the team of volunteers provided the support she needed.

With Karen’s prayerful guidance and gentle encouragement, little Maisie began to flourish. She has learned how to interact with other children again and has made some beautiful friendships.

The team’s compassion and the loving environment of the youth group rekindled her confidence and helped Maisie start to heal.

The transformation has been powerful. Maisie now speaks up for herself, has developed meaningful relationships, and enjoys learning about God and how deeply she is loved by Him.

The progress she has made is nothing short of remarkable. The support of people like you gave Maisie a lifeline. Through attending the Church Army youth group Maisie has been supported through unimaginable trauma.
