We will help you discern your calling, equip you with training and study, and help you follow where God is leading you. Church Army Evangelists come in all shapes and sizes, from all traditions of the church, from all backgrounds, and all educational abilities. Our training will develop and deepen your understanding of pioneering evangelism and Church Army’s DNA. We train all our evangelists in context, and you will find that the mix of learning, practice and faith will be the rich soil that will help your evangelism gifts to grow.

Once you’ve successfully completed your training, you will be Admitted to the Office of Evangelist under the authority and behalf of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, and Commissioned as a Church Army Evangelist. Most people also receive a Certificate of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission accredited by Durham University.

Discernment Process

Your discernment journey starts with an initial conversation with Church Army’s Vocations Chaplain. Discernment includes two interviews Stage 1 and Stage 2 which are held at Church Army’s central offices in Sheffield. Alongside these you may be invited to visit a Centre of Mission, go on a spiritual retreat, read a recommended book. Those offered a place to train with Church Army would start in the following September once discernment is completed.

Year 1

Your Training begins…

Your training starts by exploring Church Army’s vision and values, what it is to be part of a community, and who you are and how you learn. There’s teaching on how scripture, tradition, reason and experience can all point us to God, how you understand the cross and the way you communicate it to others, what mission and evangelism is, and how the church has engaged in mission and evangelism at various points in its history.

Year 2

Your second year of training starts with learning on how to create a new Christian community, and how to plan and lead worship in your context. In the spring, you’ll explore more about how we reflect on God at work in our lives and ministry, and reflect on a visit to a Centre of Mission. You’ll also learn about how to use the Bible in pioneer ministry in your own context.

Year 3

Your final year of training includes learning to help you look again at your vocation and how you discern God in your context, what it is to be a leader in the church, and how to pioneer a new project or initiative. As you end your training, you’ll explore what a difference this journey through training has made, what your next steps in learning will be, and what difference your Commission will make to you.

Admitting & Commissioning

Life as a Church Army Evangelist

Once you’ve been Commissioned as a Church Army Evangelist, you’ll join hundreds of Evangelists ministering in the church. Some of our Evangelists work for Church Army in our Centres of Mission, and others may be chaplains, pioneers, youth workers, community workers, and church planters.
