Tuam Centre of Mission

"Ballina Churches together is the vision of Church leaders and laity in Ballina Co. Mayo to demonstrate a common ecumenical witness to Jesus Christ. The aim is to address the unmet needs of people in the Ballina area and reach out to the disadvantaged of the community to ‘give a voice to the voiceless.'" - Recommendations of community consultation report.

Tuam Centre of Mission, launched in April 2016, is a partnership between the Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry and Church Army. It will be based in Ballina and its focus will be engaging with the local community to respond to the social justice needs identified by the Ballina Churches Together Report (2008). It is anticipated that a hub/drop in centre and an office will be identified to be ‘the base’ for the project. As well as being a partnership between the Diocese and Church Army, it will also be a partnership with the local churches.

Aims & Objectives of the Centre of Mission

The aims and objectives of the newly established Tuam Centre of Mission are:
  • Providing a drop in centre: to identify and create a hub for contact and outreach to all disadvantaged members of the Ballina community.
  • Working together with existing agencies and organisations: to ensure that there is close collaboration with churches and agencies for the needs of the community in the town.
  • To provide ongoing support for individuals in need: As Christians we seek to welcome and to care for the burdened. We aim to provide appropriate spiritual, psychological and practical assistance to those in need.
  • Providing spiritual support through prayer: providing spiritual support and an interchurch space for reflection and prayer, staffed by a pastoral team of trained volunteers from across the church community in Ballina.
  • Providing outreach and support to young people: We aim to provide a constant support for young people and an appropriate place where they can meet and socialise.
