THE 1882 Challenge
Can you do something amazing between 18 and 26 September? Help us raise £82,000 for marginalised communities across the UK and Ireland by doing something around the numbers 18, 82, or even 1882!
For many 2020 has been a year to forget, we've all been affected one way or another. Lockdown has restricted our freedom in ways we could never have imagined. The creative ways in which our evangelists and staff work today is totally in line with the creativity which Wilson Carlile displayed in founding Church Army back in 1882 - to be a movement of ordinary people whose aim was to reach those the church was failing to reach.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shops and business are struggling or closing and many charities may not survive. More than ever our world needs to know the good news of Jesus and churches and charities stand in the gap to ensure the hungry are fed, the homeless are safely sheltered and the isolated and the lonely are welcomed into community. Its in this context we are continuing to open new centres of mission to help meet the need but this all costs money.
That's why we'd like you to get involved in the 1882 Challenge.

Church Army was founded in 1882 by Wilson Carlile! Church Army's work didn't stand still then, and we don't stand still now - we're always moving forward and seeking to meet poverty in new contexts and share Jesus in new ways. The 1882 Challenge is happening between 18 and 26 of September because this is when Wilson Carlile is remembered in the Church of England calendar! Find out more about Church Army's history...
What sort of challenge could I do?
We'd love you to come up with a challenge around the numbers 18, 82, 1882 (or even 18+82=100!). Think 18 cakes for a cake sale, an 82 metre hopscotch, 1882 minutes of running during a week, or…well you get the idea! Your challenge could be absolutely anything, so get your thinking cap on!
Why is the fundraising target £82,000?
Not only do the numbers tie in to our 1882 Challenge theme, £82,000 will support three new centres of mission
for a whole year. Church Army's work through centres of mission is growing, but this takes money to fund!
Can I (or those sponsoring me) donate by text?
Yes, absolutely! You can donate £10 by texting CA1882
- it's that simple! (Fundraising, payments & donations will be processed & administered by the National Funding Scheme, operating as DONATE. Texts charged at your standard network rate. T&Cs: www.easydonate.org
